Tomkins Scores Third Place Finish At Canandaigua Motorsports Park

It was a bitter-sweet top three finish for Gary Tomkins on Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. In the closing laps, it appeared victory may be in reach, but as the handling went away as the final laps counted down, the culprit was soon determined to be a soft right rear tire that kept him from victory lane. Gary was fast right from the beginning, posting the second fastest speed in practice. He started his qualifying heat from fifth place, and moved up quickly. On the final corner of the last lap, he made the winning pass. Before the feature, Tomkins made some final tweaks to the setup of his 2012 Bicknell, confident that he would have a good run. He started the 35 lap main event from the eighth position, and just like the qualifier earlier, he moved through the pack very quickly. As they completed lap two, he was already up to third place, and made his way to second just two laps later. He continued to set a torrid pace the next few laps as he chased down the race leader, and took over the top spot just past the halfway point on lap 20. Tomkins led the next 12 laps before the handling on the car started to go away in the closing laps of the race.
