Cornwall, ONT – July 11, 2010 – One sure way for Brett Hearn to break out of a slump is to send the Super DIRTcar Series record-holder to Canada. In his second appearance of the season at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, the all-time Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels champion rode away with a commanding victory, this time worth $6,000 as the Sussex, N.J. speedster elevated his career mark to 104 wins on DIRTcar Northeast’s premier Big-Block Modified tour.

Hearn has also now captured twice as many Super DIRTcar Series victories north of the border than any other driver, improving his Big-Block total to 18 in Canada with win number four registered at Ron Morin’s fast quarter-miler in Cornwall, Ontario.

“We’ve had a tough time on the series so far this year,” remarked Hearn, who posted his first top-five of the year on tour just last Sunday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. “So to come here and back up the 2nd-place finish at Rolling Wheels with a win is pretty good.”

“You could tell we had a good car tonight. I could do what I wanted to do and make the passes when I needed to make them. To go by Billy Decker who was leading the race for so long was a pretty tough deal,” said Hearn, buckled into last season’s proven Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Benjamin Moore Paints/TEO

After leading from the opening green flag, runner-up Decker from Unadilla, N.Y. stretched out his Super DIRTcar Series points lead, while new track record-holder Steve Paine from Waterloo, N.Y. ended up third ahead of Rochester, New Yorker Danny Johnson and hard-charger Jimmy Phelps from Baldwinsville, N.Y. Central New York standout Ryan Phelps, Frenchman Kayle Robidoux, touring stars Dale Planck and Matt Sheppard, and Planck’s teammate Carey Terrance filled out the Top-10 in the headline ‘Go Glass International 100’ that needed just 38 minutes to complete.

Paine joined Decker and Johnson among the last arrivals at Cornwall on Sunday, yet his Swarthout Recycling no. 7x Tallmadge Tire-Terrell's Potato Chips/Bicknell entry was dialed in right from the start. Despite no practice, the ‘Hurricane’ circled the track in a time of 12.875 sec. (69.903 mph), establishing a new Big-Block standard after surpassing the old mark of 12.882 sec. set in 2006 by fellow Waterloo driver Sheppard.

Paine also copped his qualifying heat and appeared to have the car to beat until selecting 11th in the customary pre-race draw among the Top-12 preliminary race qualifiers. Yet after timing sixth quickest in Bilstein Shocks trials and crossing the line third in his own heat, Decker snatched up the pole to lead the 30-car field to the starting grid and begin the 100-lap finale.

As expected, Decker blasted out front early with Robidoux and Planck in tow, opening up a 10-car length advantage before Michael Storms suffered engine trouble in the Four Star/TEO mount to force out the first yellow flag on lap eight. Small-block pavement specialist Martin Roy was the next victim of mechanical failure, forcing the Napierville, Que. pilot to pull to the front stretch infield and incur a second caution period on lap 13.

Decker remained unchallenged up front ahead of Small-Blockers Robidoux and Ladouceur while third-place starter Danny Johnson fell into fourth followed by Pierre Dagenais as heavy traffic patterns developed during the initial 30 laps. When Billy Dunn stopped high in turn two to bring out the third yellow eight laps later, seventh-place started Hearn had cracked the front-five for the first time.

At the midway point, fourth-place Hearn had tracked down Robidoux and Ladouceur while Decker was a straightaway out front in the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell ride. Paine had crept up to six followed by Johnson, Sheppard, Planck, Pat O’Brien and Tom Sears Jr.

Lap after lap Hearn proceeded to get quicker as the field seemed to slow on the slickening surface. He grabbed third from Ladouceur on lap 55 and swept high around Robidoux for second on lap 62, then stalked Decker for a handful of laps before making the winning pass low out of turn four on lap 67.

A pair of cautions for Mario Clair (lap 77) and Dunn (lap 81) were all that could hold Hearn back as Decker fought off Paine for the runner-up position. Paine finally wrestled second-place from Decker on lap 70 before hopping the cushion on lap 85 and dropping back to third.

With 10 to go 22nd-place starter Jimmy Phelps had reeled in the leaders, taking over sixth with five to go and looking for more. Johnson ducked under Robidoux for fourth on lap 93 and Phelps grabbed fifth two laps later. With just one to go Phelps nosed past Johnson, yet coming around for the final checkered Danny edged Phelps by a few feet, far behind Hearn who built a straightway advantage at the stripe.

“When the track changes as much as it did during the course of the feature, you never know what to expect,” admitted Hearn, who followed up his Small-Block win at Cornwall on May 23 with victory in the 100-lap Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship Series opener at Merrittville (Ont.) Speedway the following day. “It started out pretty tacky and instantly went black with only a couple spots of brown.”

“You just didn’t know what’s going to happen so you just keep working at it and working at it. When I needed to get a good pass at the bottom of (turns) three and four late in the race I could do it. And that was something I couldn’t do at the beginning of the race,” Hearn added.

Securing an eighth straight top-five tally in as many Series shows this season, opening round Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway winner Decker settled for second-place for the fourth time in 2010.

“The car was real close, just hate to waste a front row starting spot like that,” said the disappointed driver after leading the first two-thirds of the race only to fall short in his own bid for a fourth tour triumph at Cornwall. “So far we’ve been fortunate to get some real good starts in the Super DIRTcar Series.

“We were really good, probably obviously too good early to be that good later on. The track slowed, it gave up a half-second, we gave up around 7/10-sec. and just got poorer and poorer after that. Brett was driving away looking pretty good. If we had a late-race caution not sure if we had anything for him but I would’ve been up there on the wheel trying to figure something out. Everybody’s working real hard, we’re gonna get ‘em pretty soon,” declared Decker, 45, who stands third all-time with 54 Series wins, including four at the Syracuse Mile on the New York state Fairgrounds.

Posting his second tour top-five finish in the past three races, Paine was content with the show position despite climbing as high as second with 20 laps to go.

“Its our best finish of the Series so far, we’re just going a little bit at a time,” said Paine, 49, after matching his best tour finish at Cornwall that was logged in 2007. “Had a good qualifying run and a good heat but drew a bad a number to start and still came back to almost finish second. Almost pushed off at the end there and went last.”

“I got up next to Brett on that last restart and that’s about as close as I could get. Always thought I could get second tonight, just got really bad in the holes. I tried two or three different lines and everyone got worse. Just happy with third right now. We’ve got until Thursday (All-Star Weeknd) to get things together,” added Paine.

Teams return to Central New York for the highly anticipated return of DIRTcar All-Star Weekend, leading off with Brewerton Speedway on July 15 before concluding at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on July 16-17 in the summer’s richest short-track racing event in the country for Big-Block Modifieds.

As part of the DIRTcar All-Star Weekend, July 16-17, on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds, the $500-to-win 15-lap All-Star Exemption Dash boasts a full purse for the Big-Block Modified qualifiers and more importantly automatically locks into the pre-race draw the top-two finishers for the All-Star 100 on Saturday, July 17, this year spreading out the $20,000 winner’s share between three fast-paced feature races.

*Missing Yet Not Forgotten: The Super DIRTcar Series show at Cornwall carried on as usual Sunday night with one notable exception, the absence of veteran public address announcer Brian Mulligan. Also serving today on the road as the DIRTcar Pro Stock Series Race Director, Mulligan continues to recover from a successful six-hour operation on July 5 to remove a tumor near his brain stem (4th ventricular). Brian remains in Ottawa Civic Hospital still resting in the intensive care unit for observation and according to his primary doctor is on track to making a full recovery in the months ahead. Although currently experiencing temporary trouble swallowing and not yet able to speak, he is in good spirits … inquiring from his son and car owner Patrick Mulligan if he had purchased the shocks for his own Pro Stock yet. An internationally acclaimed motorsports promoter, marketing and public relations specialist, Mulligan was recently honored during the 19th Annual Northeast Modified Hall of Fame award ceremonies on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds over Memorial Day Weekend. On Sunday, May 30 he was named recipient of the 2010 Leonard J. Sammons Jr. Memorial Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to auto racing. Personal cards may be sent to Brian c/o the Mulligan Family, 620 Melba Street - Cornwall, Ontario K6K 1T2.

*Super Series Showstoppers: Destination events on the DIRTcar Racing Northeast Big-Block circuit are approaching fast, leading off with the 2nd Annual All-Star 100 Weekend, this year featuring three straight days of racing at both Cayuga County Fair Speedway and Brewerton Speedway, July 15-17. The ‘Great Canadian’ tour in Quebec hits autodromes Drummond and Granby, July 19-20, with Super DIRT Week XXXIX on the Syracuse Mile, Oct. 6-10, and DIRTcar Fall Nationals at Brockville Ontario Speedway, Oct. 16-17, two of the biggest autumn attractions. The Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship concludes competition for the first time ever as a major part of the World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte (NC), Nov. 4-6, joining the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars and the World of Outlaws Late Models as all three series wrap up their seasons with nationally recognized championship-deciding point events.

*Twitter Keeps Series Connection: Fans were kept informed throughout the Super DIRTcar Series show at Cornwall with their ‘Twitter’ connection providing Big-Block updates both on-line and through text messages on cell phones. Along with the brief bulletins offered Twitter ‘followers' of the SDS during each race night, fans can also expect to receive breaking news and interesting notes between tour stops. To sign-up as a SDS Big-Block ‘follower' on Twitter and receive updates anywhere at anytime, visit http://www.twitter.com/SuperDIRTcar.

*Pot Holes: Late arrivals following lengthy waits at Canadian customs included Series points leader Billy Decker, Gypsum teammate Ryan Phelps, Danny Johnson and unlikely Bilstein Shocks Fast Timer Steve Paine. Despite holding a special $900 permit to curtail such lengthy delays, Phelps was still sidelined for 4 hours before pulling pitside moments before the drivers’ pre-race meeting … The father & son tandem of Laurent Ladouceur and Joey Ladouceur were in competition with Joey steering his dad’s back-up no. 23 Mr. Radiator/Bicknell entry for just the second time ever in open-wheel action hoping to “work out a miss in the motor” that Laurent sought to find the cure. Joey did double-duty as he also piloted his familiar Coffrage 20-20 no. 92 Minimax Express, the same car that he claimed the Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series event at Cornwall in May. Laurent (1989) and Joey (2004) are the only father/son combination to click for Mr. DIRTcar titles in the organization’s 35-year history … Another Series show, another different ride for tour regular Gary Tomkins. A long-time Bicknell chassis supporter, Tomkins jumped into David Thompson’s no. 1 Back's High Performance Fuels/Troyer machine after Troyer Racecars mainstay Billy Colton first talked with Thompson at the Mohawk Int’l Raceway tour stop (June 23), then followed up with a phone call last night to lock up the deal.

UPCOMING EVENTS
The premier Big-Block Modified tour in the nation returns to Central New York for three marquee events in the middle of the month. The 2nd Annual DIRTcar All-Star Weekend opens July 15 at Brewerton Speedway and concludes at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on July 16-17 in the summer’s richest short-track racing event in the country for Big-Block Modifieds. There’s little time to rest as teams head north to contend in the ‘Great Canadian Tour’ with autodromes Granby and Drummond hosting back-to-back 100-lappers July 19 & 20 in the province of Quebec.
