Jimmy Phelps Best In All-star Preliminary Show Friday At Cayuga County
Tom Skibinski posted Sunday July 18, 2010.

Weedsport, NY – July 16, 2010 – Friday night featured the 2nd Annual All-Star 50 at Cayuga County Fair Speedway and for the second year in a row it was a Phelps speeding into victory lane to collect the $3,000 top prize.

In this year’s return edition, however, it was cousin Jimmy Phelps from Baldwinsville, N.Y. crossing the line first to take top honors in the ‘Super DIRT Week of the Summer’ at the home of DIRTcar Racing Northeast.

“Feels pretty good to finally get a series win here, every time we’re confident coming in although, until tonight, we usually left for home frustrated and disappointed,” remarked a relieved Phelps, 35, in the Weedsport winner’s circle for the second time in 2010. Last July it was Ryan Phelps climbing atop the podium after registering his first career series win to kick off the inaugural All-Star Weekend at The Port. “This one couldn’t come at a better time, it certainly gives us a lot of momentum going into tomorrow.”

“We’ve been pretty good here all year so this kind of win really helps. The car is really good, we’re just going to have to watch the track tomorrow and make some more good decisions. Hopefully, we’ll have a little luck and be there at the end,” said Phelps, after scoring his third Super DIRTcar Series win of the season to give him eight all-time.

For the second straight series show Phelps battled Matt Sheppard much of the distance, with ‘Super Matt’ settling for second following his own 50-lap triumph taken the previous night across town at Brewerton Speedway. North country traveler Billy Dunn finished a season-best third ahead of a hard charging Tim McCreadie and current tour points leader Billy Decker.

DIRTcar’s richest summer event of the season for Big-Block Modifieds at Cayuga County attracted 46 open-wheel teams to Central New York. Yet in the end it the two most familiar cars and drivers once again showed the way as they remained at the top of their game from the opening green.

Waterloo, New Yorker Sheppard posted his fifth Bilstein Shocks Fast Time in the 10th tour event of 2010 while Phelps was clocked fourth quickest before taking the checkered flag in the fourth of five qualifying heats.

But despite selecting the pole in the customary pre-race draw, Phelps dropped back as far as third in the early stages before his HBR Motorsports no. 98h Wave Energy Drink-Mohawk Northeast/Troyer entry found its groove by the midway point of the race.

“In this kind of company you just never know if you’ve got the car to beat,” said Phelps, who relinquished the lead to front row partner Dunn at the outset and watched as fourth-place starter Sheppard raced by to grab the runner-up spot on lap nine. “I finally had to take a look at the top side and the car rolled in there nice and drove off (turn) two just as good.”

“Before then I hadn’t run high all race because Billy was up there and I was trying to make the bottom work. It actually felt decent running low, just didn’t feel like I had a good enough car that could run with him. But once we took over the lead and got into a rhythm, the car was just awesome,” noted Phelps after matching Sheppard’s season-high mark of 11 Big-Block feature wins on the demanding DIRTcar Northeast circuit.

After pacing the field nearly half the race aboard his family-owned Number One Speed Supply no. 49 Pemco Contracting-SUNY Canton/Bicknell machine, Dunn was tracked down by Sheppard in backstretch traffic on lap 24. Phelps took advantage in the same manner to snatch away second the next time around, and with the race halfway over the prized pair ran one-two and never looked back.

Early cautions for flat tires suffered by Dale Planck (lap 6) and Tim Fuller (lap 8) were the first to slow the action, although when Canadian standout Stewart Friesen dropped off the pace with mechanical problems on lap 28, the ensuing restart proved far more significant. As soon as the green lights reappeared, Phelps bolted to the high side of the Sheppard’s JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell ride and emerged as the third and final race leader with 22 laps left to cover. The finally caution period when Vic Coffey’s Sweeteners Plus machine went up in smoke entering turn four only tightened the pack and delayed the inevitable as Phelps cruised on to a three car-length victory in the 27-minute main.

“Traffic is definitely easier to deal with when you’ve got a car that will go all over, but getting through it lap after lap you still have to be lucky,” figured Phelps, who closed to within 77 points of Decker on the Super DIRTcar Series points chart while Sheppard cut the gap to just 16 with three separate point races highlighting the Saturday evening All-Star card at Cayuga County. “We just got the brakes tonight and had holes to fill when we needed them. Everything just went our way tonight.”

Just 24 hours earlier, runner-up Sheppard had found his own groove in the early stages, forging the final lead change from Phelps on lap 11 after starting eighth on the Brewerton grid. Needing 24 circuits to get past Dunn from his fourth starting slot at Cayuga County, Sheppard still lost the point to Phelps just four laps later in a stellar move that might have even surprised the Waterloo star on this occasion.

“We’ve got a good car, just got to try and keep on rolling here,” said Sheppard, 28, after posting his seventh Top-3 finish in the 10 Series stops. “Jimmy has had a pretty good almost every race, too.”

“We were about the same speed all night. I got Jimmy last night because he picked the wrong lane on a restart and he got me tonight because I picked the wrong one so it pretty much was a wash-out. The rest of the race I think we were pretty much about the same exact speed. Neither one of us could really pull the other. That one restart was the only difference,” added Sheppard, who finished just four points back of overall champion Brett Hearn in last year’s Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar title chase while Phelps placed third.

Opening his fourth full-season following the tour with a fifth-place finish at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway in March, Dunn settled for the show position at Cayuga County where he scored his only feature in June of 2007.

“It’s nice to finally be back up here (podium), we kind of got off track for the last month and went back to some basics,” said Dunn, 26, the reigning Can-Am Motorsports Park points king, whose previous best Series finish was also at Cayuga County in August of 2007 when the Watertown, N.Y. pilot secured runner-up honors. “It seems to have helped out, I just have to thank all my sponsors, wouldn’t be doing all this without them.”

“These two (Phelps & Sheppard) in front of me have been the class of the field all year so it’s going to take some work to get them. But we’ve got them in our sights now and we’ll just do the same thing tomorrow night. Hopefullly, we’ll draw good and be down here again,” Dunn added.

For the second straight night buckled into Vinny Salerno’s potent small-block powered Four Star Motorsports no. 4 Keizer Aluminum Wheels-Kruger-Kosakowski Plumbing & Heating/TEO mount, McCreadie cracked the feature race line-up. T-Mac proved to be far more assertive on Friday with more laps under his belt. The 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion started 14th and only the final checkered flag prevented him from advancing higher than fourth on the final scoresheet.

Coming home fifth in the feature, Decker was second fastest in time trials and was clearly recognized as an early favorite to win the 50-lap nightcap after dominating the 15-lap Exemption Dash --- a special event that locked both he and runner-up Ryan Phelps into the pre-race draw for starting positions in the headline $20,000-to-win ‘All-Star 100’ set for Saturday at the fairgrounds. The ‘Franklin Flyer’ drew seventh to start the main yet could climb no higher than fifth steering the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers/Bicknell car. His ninth Top-5 in 10 Series shows is still standard as he makes a bid for his third Mr. DIRTcar title at the age of 45.

Super DIRTcar Series teams stay overnight and awake Saturday for the 2010 ‘All-Star 100’ finale, paying out $20,000 to the winners of the three Modified main events 25-, 25- and 50-laps in distance, with first-place prizes totalling $20,000 in the richest short-track race staged for Big-Blocks during the summer months.

SKIDMARKS
Cayuga County Clubhouse Comes To Life: The once legendary Clubhouse located directly behind the Cayuga County Fair Speedway grandstands was reactivated Friday night as the All-Star Weekend opening night celebration carried on after hours. The once clamoring clubhouse confines were restored to their prominent place on the evening agenda, once again turning into THE gathering spot as fans and racers reunited to swap stories and relive many of the magic moments that make up a most colored history at The Port. While the just competed All-Star 50 was replayed inside on a jumbo screen compliments of Thomas Video Productions, live music was provided by ‘Raised On Radio’ as the racing was rehashed by many into the morning hours. Free entertainment continues in the CCFS Clubhouse on Saturday with the speedway staff serving drafts and dogs from the last checkered flag until 2:00 a.m.

*All-Star Exemption Dash Finish: Team Gypsum cars of Billy Decker and Ryan Phelps automatically advanced to Saturday’s All-Star 100 redraw after taking the top two positions in the 15-lap Exemption Dash. Decker overtook pole-sitter Phelps after starting third in the 9-car field with Matt Sheppard shadowing the ‘Rocket’ the last 10 laps. Decker pocketed $500 for his dominating performance and now sets his sights on the $20,000 jackpot that awaits the winners in three fast-paced feature races Saturday.

*All-Star Tweets On Tap: Fans were kept informed throughout the Super DIRTcar Series show at Cayuga County with their ‘Twitter’ connection providing Big-Block updates both on-line and through text messages on cell phones. Along with the brief bulletins offered Twitter ‘followers' of the SDS during each race night, fans can also expect to receive breaking news and interesting notes between tour stops. To sign-up as a SDS Big-Block ‘follower' on Twitter and receive updates anywhere at anytime, visit http://www.twitter.com/SuperDIRTcar.

Pot Holes: Plenty of television time afforded by Syracuse stations to the Big-Block boys as cameramen from both CNYcentral News (CBS & NBC affiliate) and WSYR-TV 9 (ABC) shot clips up close and personal with defending All-Star 100 Champion Ryan Phelps and Super DIRT Week ‘09 Syracuse 200 winner Matt Sheppard. WOLF 105 Radio provided call-ins to its listeners with station personality Skip Clark taping spots with Super DIRTcar Series record-setter Brett Hearn and 1992 Syracuse 200 Champion Richie Tobias Jr., who doubled up Friday racing both his SpdSTR and the back-up #33 DIRTcar Big-Block of Mike Mahaney. Time-Warner Cable YNN News 10 arrived in time for qualifying action…..Fans on hand for All-Star Weekend II remained fired up all night as they witnessed the opening day installment of a $30,000 Pyrotechnics production, which is part of the World Racing Group (WRG) traveling external combustion unit that has been on tour across the country. Flames and fireworks were the order of the day, with every checkered flag thrown to the Big-Block winners accompanied by a loud and heated outburst from the band of pyros infiltrating the infield throughout the program…..The established ‘voice’ of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, Alabama resident and WoO LM Public Announcer Rick Eshelman packed up his bags and drove 1,000 miles north before arriving just in time to pick up the mic and spearhead the trackside driver interviews during ASW II in Weedsport … A late birthday present came for Rich Scagliotta as he time trialed a career best fifth at Cayuga County the day after turning 48 years-old when the Bound Brook, N.J. pilot placed 14th in Brewerton’s 50-lap tour finale. Last season at age 47, Scagliotta garnered Motorsports Safety Systems/G-FORCE DIRTcar NE Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year recognition.
