Oh Canada! Hearn Glad To Be Back Across Border After Granby Series Win
Tom Skibinski posted Tuesday July 20, 2010. |
Granby, QUE – July 19, 2010 – The Super DIRTcar Series has ventured across the Canadian border twice this season. Record seven-time and defending overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified champion Brett Hearn wouldn’t mind if every tour race provided him with such a profitable exchange rate.
Hearn added to his remarkable resume in the province of Quebec on Monday, winning a duel with Dale Planck during the first half of the 15th Annual Fromagerie Qualite Summum 100’ at Autodrome Granby, then outdistancing Matt Sheppard after his tenacious charge to the front to collect the $6,000 first-place prize.
“Some tracks suit me better than others,” remarked Hearn, 51, following his eighth Big-Block tour triumph at Granby, where he also scored a Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series victory in 2003. The ‘Corporate Jet’ has now more than double his opposition with 19 Super DIRTcar Series wins recorded on both Ontario and Quebec.
“I’ve already been up to Granby a couple times and I kind of know what to expect from the track, of course it was little different tonight. I was really worried in the beginning of the race that the car was too good early on. When Dale (Planck) got by me I was worried even more the car was going to get worse as the race went on. Then it came back to me, so you just never know,” said Hearn, won his first Series show of the year at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway on July 11 to boost his all-time career leading to 19 in Canada.
After pitting for a new shock just shy of the halfway mark in the 100-lap Modified main, Sheppard methodically made his way back through the field to grab second with eight to go, yet ran out of time as traffic thwarted his best effort with just a couple circuits left in the caution-marred affair. Central New York series regulars Tom Sears Jr. and Jimmy Phelps crossed the line next followed by New Jersey traveler Rich Scagliotta, who scored his first-ever Top-5 finish in DIRTcar Northeast’s top tour for the mighty Big-Block Modifieds.
The Quebec skies remained overcast much of the afternoon until finally opening for a brief shower that further inundated the speedway grounds. New Granby owner Dominic Lussier, his Assistant General Manager Jean-Francois Tessier and Race Director Erick Baker never deviated from their plan, however, eventually signing in 36 Modifieds and attracting a large crowd for the highly anticipated ‘Great Canadian Tour’ opener.
Any delay to rework the hallowed half-miler was certainly worth the wait as two-time track points champion Steve Paine (1996-97) shattered his track record in Bilstein Shocks Time Trials. Yet the ‘Hurricane’ was just one of the 11 drivers to mirror his feat, and it was Planck heading the stellar list after establishing a new single-lap standard of 18.132 sec. (99.272 mph).
When it came time for the customary re-draw among the Top-12 heat race qualifiers, Hearn drew outside front row to join pole-sitter Sears, while Planck filled in eighth on the extended 36-car starting grid. Buckled into the ’09 Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Benjamin Moore Paints/TEO ride, Hearn wasted little time jumping out to an early advantage after the first green flag flew. Planck was even quicker in the early-going, pulling into second with 10 laps complete before ducking low in turns three and four to force the first lead change on lap 17.
Reaching as high as sixth-place a quarter way through after leading off 10th in the line-up, Sheppard dropped back to his original position just as fast with 30 laps in the books. When Series points leader Billy Decker suddenly slowed amidst a cloud of smoke in the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Express, ‘Super Matt’ took the opportunity to turn pitside and stiffen up his shock package for the 50 laps ahead.
Back under green flag conditions, Hearn edged past Planck on a lap 53 restart that was the result of an intentional slowdown by Sheppard in his JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell entry. Formidable Frenchmen Kayle Robidoux, Drummond promoter Yan Bussiere and David Hebert filled in right behind as Sears and ‘The Doctor’ Danny Johnson looked for room to operate.
The laps continued to click off at a record pace with Hearn hitting traffic by lap 69 before Planck literally hit the back marker Andre Gauthier to end his night, while collecting Hebert in the turn four jingle. The frontrunners continued o jockey and three-quarters of the way through Hearn paced the lead pack comprised of Bussiere, Sears, Jimmy Phelps, fellow Troyer driver Rich Scagliotta.
Sheppard cracked the front-five past Scagliotta on lap 79, stormed by Bussiere for third on lap 87, then overtook a strong running Sears for second on lap 92. When Hearn got bottled up behind Gauthier and Simon Perreault with just a handful of laps to go, Sheppard quickly zeroed in on Hearn. But after ‘Super Matt’ suffered the same fate as Hearn moments later, the Sussex, N.J speedster was first in line to score the decisive victory by nearly a straightaway.
“At the end there was really no place to go with the lap cars so I had to take a big chance when I split them on the back straightaway,” noted Hearn, after tacking on his all-time best 105th career Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block victory. “There were just inches between all three of us but I knew they were slowing me down a bunch so I had to get going.”
“Everybody’s tired about now. We’ve been racing a lot, the crews are tired and the equipment’s a little tired, so its good to come forward this time of year. That means the crew is working real hard, too,” Hearn added.
Entering round #12 of the Super DIRTcar Series just four points behind Decker, Sheppard loaded up for nearby Autodrome Drummond with a sizeable 55-point margin over the ‘Franklin Flyer’ who logged his worst finish (30th) in the past dozen races.
“The track was rough early on and I got up on two wheels and almost flipped a few times there,” stated Sheppard, who was looking to make it two in a row following his $10,000 victory Saturday night in the All-Star 100 series showdown at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. So then I started settling down and when I finally had enough, pitted to put on another (stiffer) shock. It was little better so I was able to drive back to the front.”
“Figured we would get back at least to where we were (10th) so we really weren’t going to lose anything. Didn’t think we get all the way up to second but I know we had a fast enough car to win it. Just ran out of time, maybe a caution or something, think we could’ve run with Brett … glad we did switch shocks when we did,” Sheppard said.
Proving his victory in the second segment of All-Star Weekend was no fluke, Sears put the Summit Auto Group no. 62s Mullen Industrial-Trackman Equipment/Bicknell mount in for another Top-3, running as high as second with less than 10 to circuits to cover.
“We’ve been running pretty good lately and I knew that if we got a good starting spot we could stay near the front,” said Sears, 39, who suffered through the loss of his car owner Jerry Faye’s wife on Saturday. “I’m pretty familiar with those top tour guys and have enough experience now in these 100-lappers. We’ve been running good and hopefully we’ll continue to get better.”
“This is our first time going to all the Series shows so we’ll be at a lot of tracks for the first time. Granby is a real nice facility and I’m looking forward to Drummond tomorrow, only been there once before but didn’t race too much.”
“Our goal is still to finish in the Top-10 in points, get some Top-5 finishes and maybe pick up a feature win along the way. We’re almost there now, all we have to do is get that first checkrered flag and we’ll be in great shape,” added Sears, a regular weekly competitor at sister tracks Brewerton and Fulton speedways.
Super DIRTcar Series teams are ready to contend in the second half of the ‘Great Canadian Tour’ with the Autodrome Drummond hosting round two across town in the Canadian province of Quebec on Tuesday.
